Reading in Reception

Reading

Sounds Write is our phonics program which develops children’s reading skills. It supports them with sounding out, blending and decoding words which will allow them to become confident, fluent readers. Phonics is taught daily to ensure children make good progress and acquire lots of different sounds by the end of Reception. Children are heard read daily by the class teacher, teaching assistant, other members of staff in school or volunteers.

It is vital to create ‘A love for reading’ right from the beginning. This can be done by sharing stories with children both at school and at home. Within the classrooms there are themed reading corners which are cosy and allow children to explore texts comfortably when they wish. Reception also have a wonderful opportunity to explore books outdoors from the reading hut.

The reading books that are sent home with your child every night are from the current schemes below.

Our reading schemes are:

  • Sounds Write
  • Oxford Reading Tree
  • Ladybird Books Read It Yourself
  • Start Reading
  • Read Zone
  • Big Cat Books
  • Reading with Phonics
  • Fairytale Phonics

Children also take home a library book every Friday which they can keep for a week. This is a lovely opportunity to read together!
