Intent: Our vision for PSHE & RSE At St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School & Nursery, our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum is rooted in our Catholic mission statement: "At St Teresa’s we endeavour to help each child to develop spiritually, socially, aesthetically and academically... and in all things to give witness to Christ" under our motto "Living, Learning, Growing in Jesus". Guided by Gospel values and the words of Jesus, “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full” (Jn 10:10), our intent is to educate the whole child in a positive framework of Christian ideals. Implementation: How we teach PSHE & RSE
The implementation of RSE at St Teresa’s is designed as a coherent, progressive whole-school approach delivered in three interrelated dimensions: the whole-school ethos, cross-curricular learning and a dedicated RHE curriculum.
Curriculum Structure & Delivery
- Core Scheme of Work: We implement the Ten Ten ‘Life to the Full Plus’ programme, a fully resourced scheme designed for Catholic primary schools, alongside National Curriculum Science and PSHE frameworks.
- Pedagogical Strategies: Lessons utilise varied learning approaches including negotiated class ground rules, teacher-led discussion, high-quality media (such as Ten Ten drama episodes and video modules), project work, role-play, reflection, trigger drawings, and values clarification.
- Distancing & Safe Environment: Teachers use negotiated ground rules and distancing techniques to ensure a safe, open climate for discussing sensitive topics without risking inappropriate personal disclosures.
Parental Partnership & Inclusion
- Primary Educators: We recognise parents/carers as the primary educators of their children. Parents are consulted throughout the RSE programme development and have access to scheme materials.
- Inclusion & Equality: In compliance with the Equality Act 2010, teaching is differentiated to meet diverse learning needs, levels of maturity, SEND requirements, and personal background, ensuring no child is subjected to discrimination.
Impact:
The impact of our PSHE & RSE curriculum is observed through pupils' personal growth, moral confidence, and measurable academic progress.
By the time pupils leave St Teresa’s, the RSE curriculum ensures they:
- Demonstrate Character & Virtues: Show genuine respect for the dignity of themselves and others, demonstrating mercy, forgiveness, and kindness in daily interactions.
- Know How to Stay Safe: Understand bodily autonomy, private boundaries, online risks, peer pressure management, and when/how to seek help from trusted adults or safeguarding leads.
- Understand Human Development: Possess accurate, age-appropriate knowledge of physical and emotional puberty changes, personal hygiene routines, and the Christian understanding of marriage and family life.
- Embody Moral Responsibility: Act as thoughtful, empathetic citizens equipped with the self-worth and integrity to navigate relationships in modern society successful
